From Hilber Nelson, MVLA PAC Chair: It’s Thanksgiving. What Are You Thankful for?

This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. I sincerely hope you and your family have a blessed day together.

When people think about the history of Thanksgiving, they typically picture the Pilgrims at “the first Thanksgiving” in 1621. That’s a major part of Thanksgiving’s history, but there’s more to it than that.

To become a federal holiday, President George Washington in 1789, declared Thursday, November 26, 1789 as a “Day of Publik Thanksgivin.” It was the first time Thanksgiving was celebrated under the new Constitution.

It wasn’t until December 26, 1941 that President Roosevelt signed a final congressional resolution establishing the fourth Thursday in November as the Federal Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Please take this moment with me to reflect on what you and your family can be thankful for this year.

In my own life, I’ve discovered that blessings are all around us when we intentionally stop to look for them. It’s true what they say, we find what we are looking for. In other words, having an attitude of gratitude is something we can cultivate, every day of the year, if we’ll just take a few moments at the end of each day to be thankful.

Reflecting on what you are grateful for, and expressing your gratitude to God and to others, can improve your outlook on life and enhance mental health.

As Chair of MVLA PAC, here’s what I’m most grateful for, in no particular order:

  1. Everyday liberties, large and small. Our first amendment rights to speak, debate, assemble and worship freely, as enshrined in our US and Idaho Constitutions.

2. Everyday living in the Magic Valley, for its natural beauty, touch of small-town Americana, welcoming atmosphere and conservative political climate. It remains a joy to call it my home since 1991.

3. At the risk of sounding like a shameless plug, I’m thankful for Magic Valley’s truly conservative legislators, and up and coming candidates in the 2026 May Primary. (Vote May 19th!)

4. The same goes for our all-volunteer board members, and their supportive families. Everyone gives of their time and talents out of their love for our community, and it shows in their level of dedication.

5. Humility. Yep. If you’ve been a subscriber to MVLA PAC Facebook, X and Substack, you already know Magic Valley’s truly conservative legislators are outnumbered and outspent. Being the underdogs is an exercise in humility and perseverance.

6. Our supporters. We would not exist were it not for our financial and prayer supporters, like you.

On behalf of the MVLA PAC Board, my sincere thanks!

What are you grateful for?
